Bryan P Sperry
photography
I took a Kodak Brownie on family trips while I was growing up and my Uncle Lee gave me my first 35 mm camera that he got in Germany while serving in the Air Force.
I did not study photography formally in college but I was fortunate to work part time as a 16mm news film editor for Connecticut Public Television. I spent several years working in video production when cable television franchises started local programming efforts.
Wanting to see the world and having grown up on Walt Disney's Davey Crockett show, I moved from Connecticut to Austin, Texas, sight unseen, to attend graduate school.
Life intervened.
I returned to photography after a career in Texas working as a public servant and advocate for improvements in health care for children.
I am drawn to photography because it requires paying attention and being present with care. My photographic interests are eclectic, capturing images from travels and birding trips.
I am still learning and trying to master the craft. I thank the wonderful teachers at the Santa Fe Workshops including:
-
Jennifer Davidson, for a wonderful introductory class.
-
Eddie Soloway, for his playfulness.
-
Kathleen Clemons, for looking closely at flowers.
-
Tony O'Brien, for deepening my seeing of light and shadows.
-
Carlan Tapp, for sharing his mastery of black and white landscapes.
-
Tyrone Turner and Lisa Cates for a wonderful week in New Orleans.
-
Cotton Miller for supporting the development of my website.
and other teachers:
-
Allison Shaw, for her beautiful images of Martha's Vineyard.
-
Stephen F. Johnson, for his focus on the subtlety of nature's beauty.
